In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened.12 And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights. 13 On the very same day Noah and his sons, Shem and Ham and Japheth, and Noah's wife and the three wives of his sons with them entered the ark,...— Genesis 7:11-13, ESV
There are a few interesting things to note from this passage. One is that this verse describes a catastrophic event that took place on the Earth that drastically changed the entire Earth as we know it. The violence of fountains of the great deep bursting forth and the rapid rise of water would have significantly changed the landscape of the earth in a few months rather than the effects of millions of years of weathering. Another interesting fact to note is that God considered Noah and his family righteous. Noah’s sons only had one wife each, confirming God’s view of marriage as a union between one man and one woman. According to Romans 1:18-31, there would have been sexual perversion on the Earth by now. Since God did not approve of this behavior, He didn’t consider people who practiced such things as worthy passengers of the ark.
